Bertie Country North Carolina

Jany 31st 1756

My Lord,

The Bearer Mr Daniel Earle Carries over p[r]oper Papers from the vestry of this Parish in the County of Bertie, Where I now am as to his Character and Scholastic Learning having been a Schoolmaster here for Some years, and that they are desirous of having him for their Minister upon his being properly ordaind and Obtaining your Lordships License.

I therefore Recommend him to your Lordship, that if you find him upon his Examination qualifyd for Orders that your Lordship may ordain him, and grant him your License and it may be an Incouragement for other young Men who are Scholars to Come over here, to be Schoolmasters, who are very much wanted here as well as Clergyman, where the Harvest is very large above 80000 Whites besides Blacks, and the Labourers few not more than Seven Clergymen in the Province, So that in ¾ths of the Province they have only lay Readers to Keep up the Face of the Christian Religion in the Province and not more Schools to Instruct their youth.

I wish yr Lordship Happiness here and hereafter, and am with great Respect

My Lord

yr. Lordships

Most Obedient &

Most Humble Servant
