Rowan Cape Fear Octobr 22d 1758

Sr,

The Bearer whoe I sent to Virginia being Returned and being paid by Governr Fauquier to Carry his Dispatches to your Excellency; though He must have wrote to you what has happend to the northward yet I would not neglect mentioning what he writes to me, that a Party of our forces consisting of 840 men were detached to Reconnetre and advancing too near the Fort du Quesne were attacked and after a brave defence were obliged to retire with the Loss of about 250 Killed or missing about 530 come back this the main Body was about 45 miles from the Fort; from our West Frontier I hear that they had an account there of a Skirmish which we had, but that afterwards advancing to the Fort they found it deserted by the French, which with may prove trueas this happend the 14th of Septembr, the french by that time might have heard of their Loss at Fort Frontenac in which all the provisions and Stores designed for them were destroyd which might have Caused their Retreat. We have had advice from the northward that the Grempus Sloop arrived at Louisburg the 15th of Septr Express with account that the King of Prussia on the 15th of July after retreating, by a [funt] from Olmutz the 1st, had been attacked by the Russians and had totally defeated them with the Loss of 16000 Austrians; The Same account Comes via Glascow of the 3d of August from Edinburgh, in which Count Daun was Either killed or a Prisoner This I Hope will be confirmed; if you have any later news from England let me Know them.

I am with due Esteem Sr

yr Excellencys

Most Obedient

Humble Servant

Arthur Dobbs
