My dear Sir:-

Your night letter of the 13th just received.¹ Governor Craig is not in the office today. The convicts have been withdrawn from the Transcontinental Railroad by order of the Council of State, at a meeting held on Monday last. The disposition of these convicts was of course left in the hands of the prison authorities.

I notice from the Raleigh papers of yesterday morning that they had been sent to the Hickory Nut Gap Road work. This is all the information that I can give you concerning the matter. I will place your telegram before the Governor on his return.
