NORTH CAROLINA GEOLOGICAL AND ECONOMIC SURVEY
FORESTRY DIVISION
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

March 30, 1916.

Honorable Locke Craig,
Raleigh, N.C.

My dear Governor Criag:-

I have noticed that the Southern Railway is interested in promoting summer travel to, and the opening up of, the Mt. Mitchell National Forest. I am writing to them today to suggest that they insert short fire-warning notices in their time-tables and advertising matter relating to this project. I think that the question of protecting the spruce forests on Mt. Mitchell in that region is so important that every leaflet should have a warning to the public against carelessness with fire; I am, therefore, offering to furnish them short, pithy notices for their use in this connection. I should appreciate it if you could use your influence with them and with the Perley & Crockett Lumber Company, to get the full use of such notices. You, perhaps better than most people, realize the necessity for absolute protection if the summit of Mt. Mitchell is to be maintained as an attractive resort.

Again, if you, or the State, are going to issue any pamphlets or other material on the Mt. Mitchell State Forest, after its purchase, would it not be a good thing to emphasize in it in some way the need for fire protection? One or two sentences would be sufficient, or one notice on the inside or the outside of the cover. This, of course, is only a suggestion.

Very respectfully yours,

J. S. Holmes
State Forester.
