General Julian S. Carr,
Durham, N.C.

My dear General Carr:

I have today appointed you to take control of the building of the monument on Mitchell's Peak in accordance with our conversation. I feel grateful to you for undertaking this work for I know that it will be done in the best possible way. I believe that the people of North Carolina will deeply appreciate your consent to do it. I enclose you a copy of the statement which I gave to the newspapers.

As soon as I get the promises which I have for money in proper shape I will turn them over to you.

Your friend,
