Transcribed from "Governor Craig Enters Protest," Daily Journal (New Bern), 30 December 1914.

[circa 29 December 1914]

Hon. Locke Craig,
Governor,
Raleigh, N.C.

British ambassador has advised secretary of state that Great Britain has now placed resinous products and turpentine (spirit oil) on the list of absolute contraband. This action is drastic, uncalled for and unfair and is a blow at an industry prevailing throughout the yellow pine belt, and it followed assurances recently given that these products would not be on contraband list. Please wire secretary of state protesting against this action and urging that it is unnecessary and unfair and requesting the state department to use its best influence to have Great Britain reconsider and rescind its action. Good results will be obtained if you will wire a strong protest immediately, and, if possible, give in your telegram the effect the ruling will have on the business in your section.

DUNCAN U. FLETCHER.
