North Carolina.

1764

May 1st.

To the Earl of Halifax one of His Majesty's principal Secretaries of State.

My Lord,

Arthur Dobbs Esqr. His Majesty's Governor of North Carolina, having made application to us to intercede with His Majesty, that he may be permitted to return to Europe for the recovery of his health, which has been greatly impaired by the Climate of that Country. We beg leave to desire your Lordship will be pleased to lay his request before His Majesty for His Majesty's directions thereupon; and in case His Majesty shall think proper to comply therewith, we submit, whether such leave of Absence should not be granted for twelve Months from the day of the Governor's arrival in England.

As We are fully convinced, how necessary and essential to His Majesty's Service it is that all His Majesty's Servants and Officers in America should personally attend their duty, We shall at all times be very cautious of recommending requests of this Nature: But the Circumstances of this Gentleman's case, who is upwards of seventy years of Age, who has resided in his Government near ten years without intermission, & undergone great fatigues; will, we hope, justify the Application we have the honour to make to your Lordship.

We are,

My Lord, &c.
