My dear Governor,

Enclosed is Smallwood's letter & my reply. Also suggested letter from you to Gen. Carr. If Smallwood's ideas seem good, we may see a way out.

Please don't think me inappreciative of the honor of the Ch'mship. I will gladly serve in any way I can. But the real task is to raise the money, wh. I am sure I cannot do. You need a man with leverage. Archimedes could upset the earth with a [illegible] [illegible]; but even Archimedes couldn't raise a mud & [illegible] with a crow bar!

Your house goes up in fine shape, lovely views form all the rooms. Much pleasure & happiness ahead of you, as you see the Mts & live in friendship with nature.

1. The dates on the enclosed correspondence and on Robert Smallwood's replies seem to indicate that this item was perhaps mis-dated by the author and should read April 1916.
