William Burg Gibson was born on May 19, 1853, in Iredell County, North Carolina. Gibson was a farmer and merchant in Statesville who served as chairman of the State Farmers Union, among other positions. During World War I, he served on the state's western district exemption board. Gibson died in Statesville on September 15, 1934.
