John Jones was a resident of Chowan and later Gates County. In 1778 he signed an oath swearing his allegiance to the State of North Carolina and promised to report any treasonous conspiracies that might threaten North Carolina's independence. Because there were several men named John Jones in the community, he was sometimes identified as John Jones (son of Joseph) to differentiate himself.
