Roy Melton Brown was born in Watauga County, North Carolina, on December 11, 1878. Brown was a teacher in Boone and later a professor at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He served as head of the Public Welfare and Social Work Division at UNC from 1925 to 1945. He died in Chapel Hill on October 16, 1962.
