Ellison Lindsay Gilmer was born in Greensboro (Guilford County), North Carolina, on August 31, 1866. Gilmer was a career army officer who served during the Spanish American War and World War I. He retired in 1922 with the rank of colonel. Gilmer died in Washington, D.C., on December 11, 1932.
