Joseph Aaron Brown was born in Germany on May 31, 1853. Brown immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was fourteen years old. The family settled in Philadelphia upon their arrival, but as a young man, Brown relocated to Long Branch, New Jersey. He remained there until around 1908 when he relocated to Asheville. He died in Asheville from the effects of tuberculosis on July 20, 1913.
