Clarence Wilkie Brown was born on August 25, 1880 in Black Mountain (Buncombe County). Brown originally owned a livery stable in Black Mountain with his brother Bert. Changing with the times, he opened a car dealership, C.W. Brown Motor Co., in 1922. He died at his home in Montreat (Buncombe County) on September 25, 1937.
