Biographical Description

Captain Gibbs was a Machapunga, or Bear River Indian who held a leadership role within the nation. He have have taken his English name from John Gibbs, who served as the colony's governor from 1689 to 1690. In 1699 Captain Gibbs and several other Machapunga leaders signed an agreement with the colonial government. Any further information about this individual has not been located.
