Biographical Description

Nick Major was an American Indian who was a member of the Meherrin nation. Born in about 1751, Major was an elderly member of the Meherrin by 1711 when members of the North Carolina-Virginia boundary commission interviewed him for his perspective on the history of American Indian territorial holdings in the area. Not only could Major speak about the Meherrin, but he also had knowledge of the Weyanoke and Tuscarora. Later that year when Christoph von Graffenreid and John Lawson were captured and tried by the Tuscarora, Graffenreid claimed that Nick Major had been a witness to their trial. If he was, no other evidence has been located to support such claims.
