Biographical Description

Joseph James Kinyoun was born on November 25, 1860, in East Bend, North Carolina. Kinyoun was a physician and is best remembered for founding the Marine-Hospital Service's Hygienic Laboratory, the predecessor of the modern National Institutes of Health. He died in Washington, D.C., on February 14, 1919.
