Biographical Description

Martha Helen Haywood was born on September 27, 1872, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Haywood was a prominent Wake County suffragist who was appointed by Gov. Thomas W. Bickett to the board of directors for the state's Confederate soldiers' home in 1919, a position she held up through 1933. She died in Raleigh on May 2, 1951.
