Hugh MacRae was born on March 30, 1865, in Carbonton, North Carolina. MacRae was a prominent businessman in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was also influential in the establishment of several immigrant colonies in the eastern part of the state and was a prominent figure in the white supremacy campaign in North Carolina. MacRae died in Wilmington on October 20, 1951.
