Biographical Description

William Pepperell (1696-1759) was a politician, shipbuilder, and colonial militia officer who commanded the successful expedition to capture the French fortress at Louisburg in 1745. Following this victory, he was commissioned a colonel in the British army. In 1755, he was given command of a 1,000-man regiment but did not see active service against the French.
