James Sprunt was born on June 9, 1846, in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1854, Sprunt immigrated to North Carolina with his parents, Alexander and Jane Sprunt. The family eventually settled in Wilmington, where Sprunt became a prominent businessman and philanthropist. He died in Wilmington on July 9, 1924.
