John Wyckliffe Garvey was born in North Carolina on October 21, 1878. Garvey was for a time a bookkeeper in North Wilkesboro (Wilkes County), North Carolina, before relocating to Richmond, Virginia, where he worked as a druggist for the Powers-Taylor Drug Company for thirty-five years. He died in Richmond on June 30, 1950.
