Sanford Hopkins Cohen was born in Charleston, South Carolina on December 7, 1851. Cohen was an influential booster of tourism in Western North Carolina, serving as manager of the Greater Western North Carolina Association and as general passenger agent for the Mount Mitchell Railway, among other positions. He died in Decatur (DeKalb County), Georgia on May 31, 1925.
