Biographical Description

Horatio Gates (26 July 1727-10 April 1806) was a major general from Virginia who led Patriot forces during the Revolutionary War. After commanding at Fort Ticonderoga early in the war, Gates took over the Continental Army's Northern Department in August 1777 and helped lead American troops to victory at the Battle of Saratoga later that month.
