Biographical Description

James Festus Barrett was born on January 15, 1882, in Madison County, North Carolina. Barrett was a newspaper editor and labor organizer, serving for many years as the president of the state's chapter of the American Federation of Labor and later served as public relations director for the AFL's southeastern department. He was known by all his friends as "Uncle Jim." Barrett died in Asheville, North Carolina on October 9, 1959.
