WHITE & GOUGH

LUMBERTON, N.C. Feby 20/20.

Governor T. W. Bickett,
Raleigh. N.V.

My Dear Governor:-

I am just in receipt of Copy of your letter to Mr. Varner with regard to the proposed Chair plant, while I may differe with you in opinion, yet I gracefully yield to your judgment,

I do not think a man or set of men should let their personal interest blind their vision to the better interest of the State, or at least object to progressive measures without investigation.

It is a well known fact that in almost every Prison in the United States there is some kind of Manufacturing, In Tenn it is Harness, I have handled the goods, in other States it is other lines of Merchandise, such as Overalls-Work Shirts, Hosiery, Brooms, Shoes &c. with the few Chairs that we might be able to make-there should be no fear from any one, specially when we make a chair not in point of Competition with anything made in the South.

Perhaps I should not have answered letters or included answer to yours, in that sent out, of which I mailed you Copy, but I had received a number of PERSONAL letters (some to-day) and my position had been made known to the Factories, hence I drafted one letter as an answer to all, but in deference to your wishes and judgment, so far as I am concerned the matter is closed.

Glad to note the improvment of Mrs. Bickett.

Sincerely Yours.

Frank Gough
