My dear Governor Craig:

I was out of the State when the Wayne County lynching occurred. I read about it with great distress. I am inclined to think that the Wayne County authorities cannot be depended on to do their duty in this matter. I should like to see the State authorities exert every ounce of power they have to relieve the terrible stain that the failure of the county authorities would leave upon the fair name of North Carolina. If there is anything I can do, I should be glad to do it. I know how great a sorrow this whole occurrence must bring to you as governor of the State. I sympathize with you and feel with all right thinking people of the commonwealth.
