Biographical Description

Mingo was an African American man residing in colonial North Carolina. Mingo's name may have been a shortened form of the Spanish name Domingo, meaning a boy born on a Sunday in the Akan day naming tradition. In 1765 Mingo and another African American man named Simon were detained in Onslow County, North Carolina and charged with robbing Thomas Pollock in nearby Craven County. Mingo, along with Simon, faced trial for the crime in July 1765. Mingo may have been found not guilty however, as records indicate only Simon was executed. Any further records regarding this individual have not been located.
