Biographical Description

Francis Fauquier (circa 1703-1768) was a British colonial administrator who served as lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1758 until his death in 1768 under two absentee royal governors: John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun, and Sir Jeffery Amherst. He is known for steering Virginia through three difficult periods: raids by Indigenous Peoples on the frontier, a compromise between colonials and English merchants regarding paper money, and the Stamp Act crisis. He occasionally disobeyed the orders of the Board of Trade and worked to balance the interests of the colonial elites and the English government.
