Biographical Description

Rufus Sigmond Hairston was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on August 7, 1894. Following graduation from Shaw in May 1917, Hairston became the first African American pharmacist in Winston-Salem. Though he registered for the draft, he was exempted from military service in World War I due to having a dependent mother. Hairston died on June 17, 1971, in Winston-Salem.
