Thomas Bog was a ship captain and a resident of Windsor in Bertie County. In 1777 he refused to take the oath of allegiance to the State of North Carolina, and as a result had 60 days to leave the state, leaving behind his wife and children. While some regarded him as a loyalist, Bogg maintained that he could not take the oath owing to some business concerns he had to settle in London. One member of the Gourd Patch conspiracy, William Skiles, stated that Bogg approved of the plot, but Bogg was never directly named as a conspirator. In August 1780 he brought William Brimage back to North Carolina to see his wife, where Bogg made a petition to the governor to be allowed back into the state. When his petition was unsuccessful, Bogg went to Bermuda.
