Biographical Description

Virgil was an enslaved African American man. Enslaved by John Whitaker Cotten, when Cotten died, he stipulated that his wife Laura Placida Cotten would then assume ownership of Virgil, and that Virgil would drive the family's horse and carriage. Virgil presumably then lived with or close to the Cotten family in Raleigh, but no further records about him have been located.
