Samuel McDowell Tate was born in Morganton (Burke County), North Carolina on September 6, 1830. Tate was a merchant, soldier, railroad official, and legislator. During the Civil War, Tate was a major in the Confederate Army. He died in Morganton (Burke County), North Carolina on June 25th, 1897.
