Biographical Description

Jamey, an African American man residing in Johnston County, North Carolina, who was enslaved by Charles Jordan. In April 1765 Jamey was arrested in Halifax County, North Carolina and charged stealing an assortment of items from a house in Edgecombe County. The motive for the theft was not recorded, but it seems likely that Jamey was gathering materials with which he planned to run away, or self-emancipate. The court found Jamey guilty and ordered his execution by hanging on April 11, 1765. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
