Biographical Description

John Whitley was a resident of Johnston County, North Carolina by 1767. A captain in the Johnston County Regiment of the North Carolina Militia from 1778 to 1781, Whitley was also an owner of enslaved people. In 1780 he served on a local freeholders court when it heard the case of Jenney, an enslaved woman charged with murder. Whitley died in Johnston in about 1819.
