Mary Amis was born in Halifax County, North Carolina in about 1755. In 1776 she married prominent Orange County merchant and plantation owner Richard Bennehan. The couple had two children together and eventually resided at Stagville, their plantation in Orange County. Mary Bennehan died in Orange County in 1812.
