Augustus Summerfield Merrimon was an attorney, U.S. Senator, and chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Merrimon was born in Transylvania County, North Carolina on September 15, 1830. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1873 to 1879. He died in Raleigh (Wake County), North Carolina on November 14, 1892.
