New Bern Septr 10th 1757—

Sir,

I have none of yr Excellencys Letters to answer having received none from you since I acknowlegd the Receipt of yrs with the Report about the Boundary Line but having answer to write to Coll Bouquet and now stand upon my preparing to Imbark our two Companies to Charles Town with whom I shall again write to yr. Excellency and having some dispatches from Governr. Dinwiddie for you and Coll: Bouquet I could not neglect writing a Line along with them as I inclose the whole under your CoverI Referr you to his Letter about our unfortunate Loss of Fort William Henry and in it above 2000 men who after defending it 6 days until all their Cannon was burnt and ammunition Expended. They made an honorable Capitulation which was broke by the villany of the French who withdrew thier guard and let the Indians in upon to them set up and massacre them, so that only stragling parties returned to Fort Edward—it is said Coll Munro and Coll Young who had gone to thier assistance with 1000 men and incamped in an [illegible] near it had gone back with 300 men had gone back and thrown themselves under Montcalms protectionThe Indians who were 1000 have returned home with their Booty and Montcalm had not advancd to Fort Henry the 15th of Augt. But they believe he had demolished and Burnt the Fort and had retreatedfrom Boston of the 15th of August Lord Loudoun they say had not sailed the 10th from Halifax that upon his unmooring to Sail they say he had advice that 8 Ships of the Line with a reinforcement had got in to Louisburg which prevented his Sailing, but as this is Ship news from Halifax I hope it is without foundation otherwise all operations to the Northward is over for this Season, the unhappy Effects of the delay of our fleet from Europe and unhappy divisions at home which I hope are now SettledI hope this will Satisfie the French this Season without attempting your Colony

I pray God we may have better success for the future. I have sent Coll: Bouquet our paper with the European Intelligence

I am with great Esteem and Regard

Sir

yr Excellencies

Most Obedient Humble

Servant
