Tyrrel County

July 17th. 1777}

Jonathan Adams came before us Justices assigned to keep the Peace of this County & being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God deposeth & Saith that being at Nathaniel Everets about a forthnight agoe he there met with Daniel Legate who asked him to take a Walk which this Deponent agreed to, he Legate then told him that they were going to form a Constitution up & to keep out Popery Legate then asked him to take an Oath of Secrecy, this Deponent told him he could keep the Secret with out swearing, but Legate at last pressed him so hard that he agreed to take it, then Legate swore him then this Deponent told Legate told him he would have nothing further to do with the Society—Legate told him that he was appointed by James Sherrard to Swear in people in this County he likewise told him that John Stewart, Thomas Stewart, John Lewhellen, John Collins, William Collings ^& Richd Fagan^ in Martin Samuel Black one of the Wardens for Tyrrel, John Garret & John Everret & Thomas Harrison Senr with many others was concerned in this County are all Concerned, likewise told that there Association extended all the Way to South Carolina & they were ^to^ oppose a Draft of the Militia & further this Deponent saith not
