Thomasville, N.C.

November 26, 1917.

Hon. T. W. Bickett, Governor,
Raleigh, N.C.

My dear Governor:

I see in yesterday’s paper that the war department has ruled that no registered man can volunteer for any service after December 15th, 1917.

My son was here yesterday from Columbia, and I advised him fully of your kind interest in his and our welfare in his future. He understands the war department’s ruling in regard to the next or third officers’ training camp, an eligible must be in the service or a graduate of some standard military school. As advised you before, he has had four months military training at Harvard University. He stood a very fine physical examination, and all that kept him out of the other two camps was his age. However, he will be twenty-two years old when the next camp starts.

Please advise me by return mail what is best for him to do and if you think best, he and I will run down and go over the situation with you, if you will set a date. He is well prepared to teach French, or do most anything, but he does not want to be drafted, and we certainly do not want him to serve as a private.

Anything you can do for us will be highly appreciated.

Yours very sincerely,

John W. Lambeth
