Mr. J. J. Farriss,
High Point, N.C.

My dear Mr. Farriss:-

I write you about two things:-

1. When the recommendations of Mr. Brown for membership on the Western District Board came I had under consideration the appointment of Mr. S. E. Hall of Winston-Salem. Personally I would have preferred to appoint Mr. Brown, both on his account and on account of the fact that he lived in High Point, but two things moved me to appoint Mr. Hall:- The first thing is I think that the Republicans were entitled to representation on this Board. The Republican leaders in the State have been intensely patriotic and their attitude deserved recognition of this kind. I think the appointment of Mr. Hall will have a tendency to keep politics out of the war. The second thing is Mr. Hall has been a very pronounced success as Chairman of the Local Exemption Board of Forsyth county. His training on that Board will be invaluable to him in discharging the duties of the District Board. I hope you will explain these things to our many friends in High Point.

2. I am anxious to have made about four sectional book-cases, one large library table and one flat top desk for the Governor’s study in the Executive Mansion. I want these to be made out of North Carolina walnut. Please ascertain whether or not I can get this work done in High Point, and if so put me in touch with the parties who are able to do it.

With kind regards both to yourself and Mrs. Farriss, I beg to remain,

Very truly yours,

[unsigned]
