PLESS & WINBORNE
LAWYERS
MARION, NORTH CAROLINA

Hon. Locke Craig,
Raleigh, N.C.

My Dear Governor:-

As per your request to me, I wrote to Hon. Mark W. Potter, President of the C. C. & O. Railroad, and who is also interested in the Black Mountain Railroad, bringing to his attention your booklet on Mitchells Peak, and I am pleased to say that I have a very nice letter from him in reply, in which he states that he will recommend to the directors that the C. C. & O. donate $250.00 and the Black Mountain, $100.00, for the erection of the monument to Dr. Mitchell. I feel sure that his recommendation will be followed by the road, and it is practically sure that you will receive this $350.00 from these sources. While Mitchells Peak is in plain view from a number of places on the Clinchfield and is quite close to the terminus of the Black Mountain, these two roads will not for a number of years receive direct benefit of any travel to the Peak.

In his letter to me Mr. Potter used the following language; "I feel that the Governor's plan is an excellent one and is deserving of the support of everyone interested in bringing about a proper appreciation of the magnificent grandeur of the splendid North Carolina mountains."

I am sure that the contributions of these two roads will be available when it is called for by you or the committee erecting the monument.

With my regards and best wishes, I am

Yours truly,

J W Pless
