GREATER
WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA
ASSOCIATION
ASHEVILLE, N.C.
Octr. 13th 1913.
Governor Locke Craig,
Raleigh, N.C.
Dear Governor;
I am enclosing you herewith the minutes of a meeting held on Saturday afternoon, which I attended. You will see by these that this committee now thinks that the best plan is to undertake to interest as many of the southern governors as possible in having the Forestry Commission, in the expenditure of the four million dollars appropriation remaining in their hands, to act with a view to making this mountain section available as a health and pleasure resort for the whole south. Their idea heretofore has been the protection of the forests and the conservation of the streams. This committee wants you to write as earnest and cordial a letter as you can to the governors of the states that are being sent you, asking them to come to Asheville as your personal guests at a meeting to be held on October 24th, if that will suit your convenience.
The Appalachian Good Roads Convention holds its meeting here Octr. 22 and 23, and a number of these governors have been invited to attend this meeting. If they come to that they might easily be induced to stay over until the 24th, when you can take this special matter up with them, but it is especially desired that this matter and the Good Roads matter do not become merged.
I am authorised to say that all the expenses of this meeting will be borne by the public organizations of Asheville, and if you think best you are authorised to invite, not only the governors, but also their wives to be present as your guests. All will be entertained at the Grove Park Inn.
I am taking the liberty of enclosing herewith a copy of what the committee thinks would be a good letter to send to the governors.
If the weather should be suitable at the time of this meeting the local committees will arrange for an automobile ride to Pisgah, and possibly other points.
Very truly yours,
