Sir,

Being Appointed by His Excellency Major General Amherst, to the Command of the Forces in the Southern District, in the room of Major General Stanwix Who is returning to England—The General delivered me Your Letter of the 24th. April, Which he received Yesterday and of Which I now transmit a Copy to Genl. Amherst for his Directions therein; In the meantime Sir, All I can Say in Answer to it, is, The Season being now so far Advanced, that Should You be able to Compleat the 500 Men You are in hopes Your Assembly will vote to be raised, it will be too late to bring them time enough to Act this way. I Should therefore think they could not be better employed, for the advancement of His Majesty's Service, than in preventing the Incursions of the Cherokees on Your Western Frontiers, and even by pursuing them into their own Country, a Measure of that kind pushed with Vigour, would Soon reduce them to reason, and Secure Your Frontiers from any further Insult. It is not in my power to Send You any Arms from hence, as I have not Sufficient for the men raising here; The Province Supplying the greatest part—
