<Letter from the Board to Arthur Dobbs Esqr. Governor of North Carolina respecting the Laws passed by him in May 1760 & inclosing an Order of His Majesty in Council repealing three of the said Laws & Copy of an Order shewing His Majesty's Displeasure at his Conduct and Copy of the Boards representation upon the said Laws.>

Whitehall

Decr. 22d. 1761.

To Arthur Dobbs Esqr. Govr. of North Carolina.

Sir,

We have had under Our Consideration the Laws passed by you in May 1760 for reviving and re-establishing the Superior and Inferior Courts of Judicature, and for the Guardianship of Orphans and their Estates, and having thought it necessary to lay the said Laws before His Majesty, for His Royal Disapprobation, We herewith inclose His Majesty's Order in Council repealing them; And to the end that you may be apprized of the grounds and reasons upon which this repeal is founded We also transmit to you a Copy of ^Vide Fol. 171.^ Our Representation to His Majesty upon the said Laws.

It was a great concern to Us to find upon this occasion that in the manner of passing these Laws, you had shown such disregard to His Majesty's Instructions in points so essential to His Majesty's Rights, and the Constitution of the British Colonies, as made it our indispensable duty to state to His Majesty in the manner set forth in Our Representation, what appeared to us in reference to your particular Conduct, and the dangerous consequence attending such repealed Acts of Disobedience; In consequence of which We have received His Majesty's Commands, by an Order in Council of which We inclose to you a Copy, ^Bundle E.49.^ to signify to you His high Displeasure at such your Conduct, and to direct and require you for the future, to adhere more strictly to His Majesty's Instructions relative to the passing of Laws as you will answer the same at your Peril.

The Laws passed at the same time, for establishing Vestries and making provision for the Clergy are now with the Bishop of London for his Consideration, and We sincerely wish that when they come to be considered they may be found to be such as We can lay before His Majesty for His Royal Approbation, and that in the manner of passing them, you have not shewn the same inattention to His Majesty's Royal Instructions.
