Tyrrel County

July 18th 1777}

Thomas Rogers came before us Justices Assigned to keep the Peace for said County who being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God Deposeth & saith that he went to a Reading at Natha[n] Everets about a forthnight agoe, John Everet took this Deponant out of the House before Service began & told this Deponent that he wanted to tell him a Secret but could not inform him without he would swear, which this Deponent thaten agreed to & John Everet administred to him an Oath of Secrecy & then gave him a Stick with three Notches & the sign of the Words Be true, After this the Deponent went out with Daniel Legate to the Orchard to whom he gave the Stick with the Sign, Legate then told this Deponent he could not swear him then but would speak to you ^him^ after sermon, when Sermon was over from the this Deponent went from thence in Company with Nathan Everet, James Holles & Stephen Fagan & ^Legate^ and on there way home they stoped & Legate to this Deponent read the Constitution to this Deponent & the others in Company after which he swore each of them to the Constitution & not to Devulge the same, After they were qualified Legate proposed to this Deponent, to Assist in getting People to sign the Association & take the Oath but this Deponent would not agree to it, & further this Deponant saith not
