My dear Gov. Craig:

I am greatly obliged for the information so courteously given by the letters just recd. I could add the following which is mere childish recollection but may give a clue to the missing deed. It was made by Judge Long I think, but I do not think Mrs Conly can prove her title to the whole top of the mountain unless by default of the deed. There were a number of claims or tracts of land, running to a corner on top of Mitchells Peak. I remember hearing my mother and aunts talk of this, and Murchisons of Wilmington, afterwards of New York City were parties whose game preserve ran to this spot They gave the necessary deed upon being asked I think—and others—did also.

The tract upon top (I am quite uncertain whether it was one acre five acres or but 1/2 of one acre containing the grave) was acquired, or supposed to be acquired by my aunts Miss Margaret Mitchell and Mrs. E. N. Grant and transferred to the University of N.C. or the Elisha Mitchell Scientific Society. I think to the University. I know that you are a trustee and can have the matter investigated to see if I am right. Such I am sure was the intention, and I think it was done tho I was but a child hearing the old folks talk, at that time Hoping the lost deed is in existence, I am
