GENERAL WAR-TIME COMMISSION OF THE CHURCHES
105 east 22d street, new york

937 Woodward Building
Washington, D.C.

November 21, 1918.

To His Excellency,
The Governor of North Carolina,
Raleigh, N.C.

My dear Sir:

I wish to express to you the deep gratification which I feel for your prompt and effective action in quelling the mob spirit and preventing the lynching of a Negro prisoner at Winston-Salem, as recently reported in the press.

No more comvincing answer to President Wilson's appeal for the suppression of lynching could be given by public officials everywhere than that which you have just given in your high minded and courageous course of action.

I trust your example will give courage to other executives in other states until this reproach to our American democracy is entirely removed.

Very sincerely yours,

G. Lake Imes.
Field Secretary.
