Robert McKnight Furman was born on September 21, 1846 in Louisburg (Franklin County), North Carolina. Furman was a Confederate veteran, politician, and newspaper editor. In 1876, the North Carolina State Senate elected Furman as their clerk. He died in Beaufort (Carteret County) on May 12, 1904.
