Avery M. Powell was born on January 29, 1819 in Caldwell County, North Carolina. Powell was a physician and cotton manufacturer who served as a member of the board of directors for the Western North Carolina Railroad. He died on March 22, 1888 in Starke (Bradford County), Florida.
